Vintageweave will be on NBC's LXTV 1st Look airing nationwide on NBC, January 21, 2011.

The producers approached us for a feature focused on 'Living The French Lifestyle'. Needless to say, we were honored to be one of only two spots in Los Angeles featured (Vintageweave and Monsieur Marcel in the Los Angeles Farmer's Market), along with a couple of incredible spots in NYC. Check local listings as it airs twice that day, once right after SNL. We're told it airs in all major markets but this is all we know as of now:

In Los Angeles: 7:30p and again immediately following Saturday Night Live (Channel 4)
In NYC/Chicago: immediately following SNL (so technically on 1/22)

The beauty is the video will be in the NBC Universal LXTV archives forevermore; we shall be sure to post a link in another blog post once it airs. ♥

It's a really great show so be sure to follow LXTV 1st Look all season long. We're huge fans!

Torchon Love!

Torchons {Dishtowel/teatowel}....a personal favorite in my household. They are the first thing I notice when walking towards a barn sale in Provence, flea market in Normandy or open air marche in St Tropez.

A favorite tongue in cheek French saying:

"Ne pas mélanger les torchons et les serviettes."

Literal translation: "do not mix dishtowels with napkins,", which means classifying and treating people + items differently according to their perceived value or class. Said another way, not mixing things of different kinds, indicating that some are superior. Well thank goodness we're living in THIS century and HOPEFULLY we mix away both our items and our people!

When dealing with inanimate objects, it's a pretty common and funny French saying. Never more evident than in the house of Gran Palais in the Warhol exhibit wherein the curator demanded that Yves Saint Laurent's portraits NOT appear side by side with other fashion designers. "One mustn't mix dishtowels with napkins," he said, before asking to have the paintings moved to the artists section. Quel Horreur!

Inspiring Potagers' Cookbook

This still shot from the Nancy Meyers' film, IT"S COMPLICATED, inspired me to do more than just a few heirloom tomatoes in pots and urns filled with herbs:

I began the journey by taking away a chunk of yard, which is at a PREMIUM when you live by the beach so this was not taken lightly. Once completed, I've not regretted one blade being gone!

Double over chicken wire to keep those pesty Bill Murray arch enemies out, the elusive gopher!

Mixing manure and other fertilizers is not pleasant to the nose, but the gratitude from your plants does pay off!

Irrigation is key for someone like me who travels outside the Country a lot.

The end result: a modest and simple raised beds that packs a whollop with favorites like French Sorrel, Heirloom Tomatoes, Lemon Cucumbers, Watermelon and Hericot Verts!

J'adore A Beating Valentine Heart

J'adore this time of year! 'Tis true that EVERY day you should adorn those you love with affection and appreciation, but to me there is something sweet in doing do something extra special and out-of-the-ordinary. Those special things that every day life doesn't necessarily allow time or energy for....

Some "extra" things I've done for my man on Feb 14, which you can do with little effort for your love. My girlfriends and I even do a little something special for one another on this day. It's a moment to reflect on what you appreciate about those special in your life:

Set the table with rose petals and lit votives;
Make an extra special meal;
Write a message in lipstick on the bathroom mirror;
Tuck a note into a pocket, briefcase or attach a POST IT note to the rearview mirror;
Text a random message of love during the middle of the day;
Breakfast of waffles in the shape of a heart;
Packed picnic of favorite yummies...enjoyed ON THE BEACH;
Wine and cheese at a park or beach watching the sunset
A "Welcome Home Martini" handed as he walks through the door just as if you were transported to being a 1950's housewife! Makes for a good laugh if nothing else!

We hope everyone had a most joyous Christmas, Hanukkah or just restful holiday season!

At Vintageweave we all celebrate Christmas and it was an especially poignant year for us: we were so gloriously busy thanks to ALL OF YOU, yet so many friends and colleagues were without jobs. It was a sincere time of reflection for me personally as I can't imagine anything sadder on Christmas morning knowing so many are without jobs, food or the simple joy of a wrapped present, especially since my parents made such an effort growing up making Christmas so special, even though we had so little money.

One area of the homeless living in clusters; heartbreaking

In this spirit I decided to institute a new tradition with family and friends. When my father passed last year I began a non-profit with another friend, Roger Goode, in honor of both of our exceptionally-giving parents. Uncle Phil and Betty's Goode Deeds was born. It started to benefit those hungry in my hometown of Northwest Indiana/Chicagoland area, but this year grew into a west coast edition. (My father was known as "Uncle Phil" to so many friends, neighbors and relatives....he was often heard replying when asked his name: "They call me Uncle Phil" and the name stuck.)

So on the morning of Christmas after attending church and exchanging presents, several friends gathered at my home where we made 100+ brown bagged lunches. I made them a macadamia nut waffle breakfast and they donated their time (I love to cook so I came out the winner!). We then piled in the car and handed them out to the many homeless on the streets of Los Angeles. I confess I did cry behind my sunglasses, but the overall feeling of the day was of gratefulness and accomplishment. It made nary a dent in the problem, but it all must start some where, nest ce' pas?

From our home to yours, we hope you begin a new tradition in helping those struggling in our challenging economy. Many blessings to all...

On another note, Vintageweave is open this week TODAY ONLY from 11:30-4 and reopening at 11:30 on Tuesday, Jan 4. We will not be shipping orders after today, and the boutique and warehouse will be closed for a much-needed holiday. We so appreciate all of YOU who made 2010 a successful year for Vintageweave.

Eight Crazy Nights

{One unbelievably GORGEOUS Menorah purchased for my client! $600 but got it ON SALE!}

Each year I decorate a favorite and very dear client's home for Hanukkah. I find this to be such an honor that she asks me especially since I am Catholic!

For the past several years she has celebrated this special holiday at a different home of hers so ALL NEW items must be purchased each year. This has allowed me to form a wonderful relationship with a local merchant in Los Angeles' Fairfax District, where many Jewish businesses are located. I adore the owners of SOLOMON'S, a Judaica emporium stocked with kiddush cups, candlesticks, prayer shawls, menorahs, books in Hebrew and much more. The two male owners (I believe father and son) are SO lovely and so very kind to always present me with a gift: "just for me, and not to give away".

Each year they patiently walk this Catholic girl through every faux pas: with every ounce of respect I either mispronounce or ask for the wrong items for the wrong holiday. I've finally learned that the "plate thingy" is beautifully named a "Sedar Plate" and one NEVER says Have A Happy Yom Kippur! (Although an old Jewish boyfriend STILL teases me that I sent him a card one year and wrote just that: "Happy Yom Kipper!" He graciously claims he thought it was cute but I'm sure his parents, one of whom is a Surviver, were mortified!)

Typically my client is out of the Country during the days of Hanukkah therefore she and her family celebrates it a wee bit later. Such is the case this year. Their Rabbi is attending a very special celebration at their home on the Saturday immediately following the last day of Hanukkah so we are adding all sorts of special touches to the home later this week. I can't wait!

I'VE BEEN A TERRIBLE BLOGGER LATELY!

Apologies....the cup has really runneth over but I've just now bobbed up for air!

Many, many photoshoots with a variety of magazines (details in 2011 when they are about to hit the stands) and lots and lots of design jobs for clients all over Southern California (Malibu, Hidden Hills, Palm Springs, Ojai, and around Los Angeles). The new store location has proved exceptionally busy so there's that, too. All exciting and wonderful! I'm now thinking of obtaining stock in Vitamins-R-Us.

A shout out to the editors and designers who have visited us lately, especial Jacqueline deMontravel of Romantic Homes and Danny Seo, doing all sorts of great things with InStyle Home. While Southern California continues to enjoy gorgeous weather and it feels as if summer has only just begun, we've been getting so many requests from our East Coast clientele for Fall-like items. Hmmmm....

Why God Invented the French Press

It's been a weary several weeks....far too much to do and far too little time in which to do it to perfection.

I'm guilty. Stress to get it right is self imposed...will stay up until the wee hours for days on end to get it all done JUST SO.

Where to begin? The month has been TREMENDOUS and I'm feeling exceptionally blessed.

Product for showroom displays to Ralph Lauren - Beverly Hills, Ralph Lauren-Greenwich, Joie NYC and Joie Paris, Anthropologie, furniture + accessories for a private Hollywood supper club, and many other retail windows and showroom displays. WHAT FUN!

Mini website redo, plan next buying trip to Paris, work on client's kitchen and study....weeeeeee goes the merry-go-round! {I LOVE IT} Corporate orders have been on the rise and 170 of these beauties were recently sourced and shipped in record time to meet a most important deadline...

The latest excitement is a top celebrity designer has named VINTAGEWEAVE INTERIORS as a favorite source so HGTV is filming a teensy weeny segment with us...

DUST! CLEAN! VACUUM! FUSS! FUSS! ARRANGE! EDIT! NEW INVENTORY DISPLAY! You name it, we did it...til the wee, wee hours of the morn.

La Quille

It's a beauty! While this is a fairly rare French Military memorabilia item, truth be told we merely fell in love with it for the colors and French writing! It lived for quite some time in our guest room until an eventual 're do' created a need to find it a new home. {Surely no one is surprised I constantly redecorate and move things in/out of my house as most change shoes??}

Celebrate LA QUILLE!

La Quille (or literally The Pin) was created and gifted to signify one's 1 year of mandatory service in the French military. Back in the day, once a male reached 18 years of age, there was a required one year of service in La Militaria. At the end of the year, members of the unit would celebrate the mandatory completion (er, many were NOT happy to serve) by each signing La Quille and a memorial of the time spent was henceforth everlasting! HOW COOL IS THAT?

This one is pretty special as it's from 1961, right after Algeria broke from France during the infamous Algerian War. The commander of the unit did all the writing of the names in this instance, as was often the case...."when the bell rung stating school was out--nary a soul could be found!"

The Algerian War, or Guerre d'Algérie, was a conflict between France and Algeria over movements towards independence from 1954 to 1962, when Algeria eventually gained its independence from France.

This wooden pillar sits 24" H x 5" Diameter. All original paint and markings, with wood cracks indicative of age. $395; France, circa 1961.

I'm not big on plastic, as I prefer to celebrate life using the best china and glassware every day...this is incorporated in my daily life routines, too. But every now and then the more appropriate choice is plastic....

A Sonoma Wedding

A long-time, loyal client from San Francisco is getting married. Imagine the delight when she called and asked if we'd consult on helping create a magical experience. They've picked a wonderful winery where the grounds are green and lush and the air is scented of oak, cedar and eucalyptus.

We'll call this lovely client "B". "B" is a Francophile having lived in Paris several years. She also likes simplicity, nature and is a girly-girl minus the lace. After several phone calls and brainstorming sessions, we settled on a theme: "French Femininity" (her fiancee is a go-with-the-flow kinda' guy! What mama wants, mama gets!).

More to come, but these ultra feminine votives are headed to Sonoma where "B" is planning her special day. I know she's going to love them as much as I do. After the nuptials, each guest will take one home. {Now that's a party favor I can sink my teeth into!}

Yesterday we had a major mishap. Crash! Boom! SMASH! It was as if I was in a Batman episode and the words were coming across the screen....

Casualty: 4 broken depression glass compotes, 3 French drinking glasses and 1 very rare antique cake plate from the 1800's.

Culprit: A mama who was busy talking on her cell phone outside our boutique while she allowed her two 4 year old twin boys (who were darling, darling cute) to romp in our boutique unsupervised.

My heart breaks a little when set designers use our antiques for films wherein the items get run over, broken or thrashed (ala Johnny trampling our dishes in Alice In Wonderland). My heart breaks bigger when children use our antiques for batting practice.

Thanks to Friend Nancy, we now have a new sign for the boutique.

Chickie, Chickie Chickenwire

During my last three trips to France (over last 15 months), I spied chicken wire cloches in retail stores, at the Paris Maison & Objet gift show and in window displays at patisseries. In one such display, the cloches were down the middle of a long farmhouse table with burning votives underneath and the light down low....WOW. Instantly fell in love!

Fast forward to this past summer where my dad and I sat in the workshop attempting to create our own. After a couple of hours of cut-up hands and snagged clothing, we realized it was a lot harder than it looked to get the wire to match up around the diameter. Our results were so lopsided!

Imagine my happy-happy smiles when I could finally find a way to bring them to the States that weren't going to cost an arm and a leg (the first artist whom I found would translate to a triple cost after shipping, customs, etc).

When you crave Italian

I rarely, if ever, post topics about food or the restaurants at which I eat mainly because I know readers are from all over the world and really now, who wants to hear about my foodie cravings in / around Los Angeles? Boring. Yawn. Besides, I eat out A LOT and many chefs around town are friends+clients (Josiah from Melisse, Raphael from Jiraffe, etc...) so I have many restaurant favorites where I drool and get crumbs on my clothes. {A blog dedicated to food for another time another day....}

That said, every now and then a restaurant experience warrants a shout out. And not because said restaurant creators looked to Vintageweave to consult and supply merchandising items+displays for their adjacent MOZZA TO GO shoppe, and not because they both have numerous cookbooks that I occasionally sell. Simply because it's pure perfection at every turn.

Enter: Pizzeria Mozza and Mozza Osteria....creations by Nancy Silverton and Mario Batali.

Course One> Tricolore Insalate. Tossed with fresh Parmesan Reggiano and anchovy dressing. KILLER. Not too salty or tart and dressing was so perfectly dispersed amongst the greens. We devoured it all in a nana second.

Course Two> Cauliflower Gratinate. Boyfriend initially scoffed the idea of a cauli dish, but when it arrived from the broiler and the smell waifed the air, he sang a different tune. Made with 10 gloves of garlic and Spanish onions, this was heaven in a dish. I kid you not. So much so, that I share the recipe below. Truly the best cauli dish I've ever tasted.

Two pies> Me: Gorgonzola dolce, fingerling potatoes, radicchio + rosemary.
Boyfriend: Fennel sausage, panne, red onion + scallions.
HOLY MOLY....to say Nancy Silverton is a bread goddess is an understatement (creator/founder of La Brea Bakery). Boyfriend and I both grew up in the Chicago area, so we know pizza. Nancy Silverton and Mario Batali have created heaven on crust. No other way to describe. No heavy red sauces or white sauces to overpower the ingredients. Just pure flavor combos that explode in your mouth.

Wine: You may ask the Sommelier at Osteria to help with a wine pairing, but the waiters are pretty well versed as well. Recommended Etna Rosso Outis, which proved to be a new all time favorite. (Warning: $80 at the restaurant, around $27 at a wine shoppe; this mark up is typical of restaurants.)

Back when I had much more time, quarterly progressive dinners with friends was a mainstay (progressive dinner=a different course at a different person's home all in the same evening). While time no longer allows, I still enjoy the experience of moving and sampling. So when I come to the Mozza enclave, I tend to eat my meal at Pizzeria Mozza and scoot next door to Mozza Osteria to enjoy wine + dessert at the bar.
Having eaten all over Italy and France, it's hard to find places that really knock my taste buds on the floor. Mozza does it time and time again. And did I mention the service is SO friendly--no LA 'tude.

Reservations hard to come by, but you can usually grab a seat at the pizza counter/bar during non-peak hours. Be sure to stop in Mozza 2 Go to see all of Vintageweave's baskets, pedestal plates and glass urns in the display and merchandising!

La Brea Avenue (at Melrose)

Hollywood, CA

*Cauliflower Gratinate (6 servings)

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons butter
1 Spanish onion, peeled, halved and cut into 1/4-inch slices
10 cloves garlic, peeled and thinly sliced
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 head of cauliflower, stem removed, cut or pulled into 2-inch chunks
2 cups heavy cream

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Place a heavy saucepan, preferably 10 inches wide with a 3-to 4-quart capacity, over medium heat and combine olive oil, butter, onions, garlic and 1 teaspoon of salt. Cook over low heat, covered, for 3 minutes.

Stir in the cauliflower, heavy cream and remaining 1 teaspoon of salt. Bring ingredients to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 10 to 12 minutes, until cauliflower is tender. Using a slotted spoon, carefully remove the cooked cauliflower and put it into a medium-sized mixing bowl.

Continue to cook until the cream is reduced by half (about 3 to 5 minutes). When the cream has reached a rich, thick consistency, add to the bowl with cauliflower, stir to combine, then place into a casserole dish and bake for 30 minutes, until brown. Allow to cool for a few minutes. Serve to ohh and ahh.

Anything with black, white and crusty all over makes us swoon. Black just makes decor ever so chic. Vintage English ironstone tureens from the 1920's-1940's have just the perfect patina....rust and crusty with small cracks here and there but no holes or major cracks (will hold water).

Divine Kitchen Inspiration

Crazy for the 2-tiered metal linen rack juxtaposed with the wood island!

Gathering ideas to help a client do a mini makeover of her kitchen. Nestled way up in the Hollywood Hills, the kitchen has great bones and fabulous layout. Just needs help with the accessories and she wants to incorporate lots of French antique bits and bobs.

Found inspiration in looking at old clippings from Cottage Style and Traditional Home (all 2008 issues). I pulled these clips as at Vintageweave Interiors, we have many similar items as shown in the photos, but always hunting down inspiration on new ways to use them. Enjoy!

At Vintageweave we're exceptionally busy this time of year with all the entertainment awards ceremonies (some televised, some not) happening around town. It's the time of year Angelenos affectionately refer to as "Awards Season". It's fun, crazy and last-minute deadline driven.

Things were especially busy on a recent Thursday and in the rush, I dropped a new shipment in from France: Cote Bastide bath product. Quel horreur!

The casualty was a broken bottle of Cote Bastide Chanvre Exfoliant. I LOVE all things Cote Bastide and have always chatted up my favorite fragrances to customers. These favorites tend to be EARTHY scents such as FIG, AMBRE, ORANGE BLOSSOM, and VANILLA TEA...but I had not yet personally tried the Chanvre Exfoliant.

As I cleaned up the mess I was overtaken by the heavenly scent and wonderful texture. Upon rinsing my hands I was impressed by how easily the granules dissipated and how soft it left my skin. I WAS HOOKED!

It's no surprise when I mention that at Vintageweave Interiors we are ga-ga, mega, head-over-heels crazy for anything with a pedestal!

A favorite decorating tool. A table's best accessory ....

These brown transferware beauties really brought out the drool bucket.

The art of this method has been long lost. Women would painstainkenly affix the design in small papers to the ceramic to create the design. The journey was loooooooong and time consuming but the result = fabulous. Nest se pas?

Burlap Bags

The craze for burlap is never ending! We get calls and emails on a DAILY basis requesting us to hunt down this burlap thing and that burlap thing in our frequent pilgrimages to France.

One such recent request was for a film starring Jennifer Aniston. The set design team wanted us to hunt down at least 18 AUTHENTIC burlap with printed French writing in order to reupholster a variety of chairs. A handful remains in our inventory
.......................and they are fantastic!

We'd love to fashion them into long bench cushions or upholster the back of a Bergere Chair....but we're more anxious to see what YOU do with them!

After all, cafes are the heartbeat of Paris. Its living stage. Anyone who has sat more than 5 minutes at any café or bistro knows you are suddenly immersed into the Parisian way of life. And since these establishments don't follow trends, they are simply FRENCH CHIC.

I once knew a woman who'd pull her French tableware out, sip her coffee and then write out a postcard in the comfort of her front porch; she'd send that very postcard to herself which noted the approximate date and location of where she wanted to visit next. Dreams aliven the spirit!

Having a Heart

January is always one of our busiest months at Vintageweave Interiors. It's been this way since we opened our doors six years ago.....

many want to start the new year with a fresh look + crazy, busy awards' season in Los Angeles

This year, we have been blessed with having an extremely fruitful January during a time when part of our world is experiencing devastation in unimaginable measure.

Thanks TO ALL OF YOU who supported Vintageweave during January, we were able to take a portion of our proceeds and donate to help the relief efforts in HAITI. $4,000 was donated yesterday from the business to Catholic Charities /Haiti Fund (to aid the orphans) and to Doctors Without Borders. This would not have been possible without YOUR SUPPORT!

While many of us have likely given from our own pockets (myself included), I'm especially grateful that the business was able to do our small part. Our prayers for the people of Haiti continue along with yours....
